Restoring the Altar: A Call to Personal Revival
The State of the Modern Altar
In the Old Testament, the altar was the place of encounter, sacrifice, and fire. Today, under the New Covenant, you are the altar. However, many believers find their "fire" has become a mere ember. The distractions of the digital age, the pressures of the economy, and the drift of "casual Christianity" have left many personal altars in disrepair.
Revival is not something we wait for; it is something we prepare for. And the preparation happens on the altar of your heart.
The Mandate: The Fire Must Never Go Out
Leviticus 6:13 gives a command that still echoes for us today: "The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out." This was not a suggestion; it was a priestly duty. As kings and priests unto God (Revelation 1:6), we have the same responsibility to keep our spiritual passion alive.
3 Steps to Rebuilding Your Altar
1. Clearing the Debris
Before Elijah could call down fire, he had to repair the altar that was broken down. Debris in our lives looks like compromise, unforgiveness, or simply "the cares of this world" that choke the Word. Honesty before God is the first step. Repentance is not just about stopping sin; it's about returning to the Source.
2. Laying the Wood (The Word)
Fire needs fuel. The fuel for your spiritual passion is the Word of God. Without a consistent intake of Scripture, your emotions will eventually run dry. You cannot have a high-temperature spiritual life with a low-volume intake of the Truth. Meditate on the Word until it becomes fire in your bones.
3. Waiting for the Fire
We provide the altar and the wood, but God provides the fire. Personal revival is a work of the Holy Spirit. Spend time in "holy waiting." Don't be in such a rush to finish your prayer list that you miss the One you are praying to. Fire falls on those who are hungry.
The Signs of a Restored Altar
How do you know if your altar is being restored? You'll notice a shift in your spiritual appetite:
- A Hunger for Holiness: Things that didn't bother you before now feel out of place.
- A Burden for the Lost: Your heart begins to break for what breaks God's heart.
- Spontaneous Worship: You find songs rising up in your spirit throughout the day.
A Prophetic Invitation
God is looking for a people who will say, "I will not let my fire go out." He is looking for altars that are ready to receive the rain of the Spirit. Whether you are in a season of drought or just longing for more, the invitation is the same: Come back to the altar.
